How to Register for Your Voter ID Card (EPIC) — Step-by-Step Guide

How to Register for Your Voter ID Card (EPIC) — Step-by-Step Guide

Registering for a Voter ID card (Elector’s Photo Identity Card) is free and simple. Your Voter ID lets you vote in elections and is accepted as a government photo ID. This page shows the complete process — who’s eligible, documents needed, online & offline steps, how to track your application and how to make corrections.

Who is eligible?

  • Indian citizen aged 18 years or older on the qualifying date for the electoral roll.
  • Resident of the constituency where you apply.
  • Not disqualified from voting by law.

Documents required

  • Proof of identity (Aadhaar, passport, PAN card, driving licence, etc.)
  • Proof of address (Aadhaar, utility bill, ration card, bank passbook, rental agreement, etc.)
  • Passport-size photograph (if applying offline)
  • Date of birth proof (if needed): birth certificate, class 10 certificate, passport.

Tip: Photocopies should be self-attested where required. Keep originals for verification.

How to apply — Online (recommended)

  1. Visit your state election office portal or the national voter registration portal.
  2. Choose New Registration (Form 6).
  3. Fill in personal details: name, DOB, address, constituency, family details.
  4. Upload scanned documents and a photograph (if asked).
  5. Submit the form and note the application/reference number.
  6. A Booth Level Officer (BLO) or local election official may visit to verify your details.
  7. After verification, your name is added to the electoral roll and the Voter ID (EPIC) is issued or sent by post.

How to apply — Offline (paper)

  1. Download or collect Form 6 from your local Electoral Registration Office (ERO) or Booth Level Officer.
  2. Fill the form in block letters and attach photocopies of required documents and a recent photo.
  3. Submit the form at the ERO office or hand it to your BLO.
  4. Verification will follow; once approved, your Voter ID will be issued.

How long does it take?

Processing times vary by area. Typically the verification and inclusion can take a few weeks to a couple of months. You will receive a reference number to track progress.

Track your application

Use the reference/application number on the election portal or contact the local ERO to check status. Many state portals also provide SMS updates.

Corrections, address change & duplicate card

  • For name/address/photo corrections, use the appropriate correction/change form on the portal (commonly Form 8) or visit your ERO.
  • To shift your voting location (transposition), fill the address change form and complete verification.
  • If the card is lost, apply for a duplicate using the prescribed form.
